Installing new flooring? Our Flooring Area Calculator helps you determine exactly how much material you need before you shop. Whether you're installing hardwood planks, ceramic tile, laminate sheets, or luxury vinyl tile, accurate measurements save you from ordering too little (and delaying your project) or wasting money on excess material.

To use the calculator, simply enter the length and width of your room in feet, plus your desired waste factor. The waste factor accounts for material lost to angled cuts, damaged pieces during installation, and irregular room shapes. For standard rectangular rooms, 5% is usually sufficient. For rooms with many corners, bay windows, or diagonal tile layouts, use 10-15%.

Different flooring types have different waste considerations: hardwood and laminate planks have minimal waste thanks to their uniform size and straight cuts. Tile installations produce more waste due to cuts around fixtures and edges. Natural stone tiles vary in size and thickness, requiring the highest waste factor.

Before purchasing, always verify the actual coverage per box — manufacturers list both nominal box size and actual square footage coverage. Some boxes include extra pieces for waste. Ordering from a single production run also helps ensure consistent color and pattern matching across your entire floor.

How much extra flooring should I buy?
We recommend adding 5-10% extra to account for cuts, mistakes, and waste from irregular room shapes. For diagonal tile installations, add 15% since there are more angled cuts.
How do I measure an L-shaped room?
Divide the room into two rectangles, measure each separately, then add the areas together. Our calculator handles one rectangular section — run it twice and sum the results.
What is the standard waste factor for laminate flooring?
Most laminate flooring installations use 5-8% waste. Planks are uniform in size and easy to cut, so less waste is generated compared to natural wood or tile.
Do I include closets in the flooring area?
Yes, include all areas that will receive new flooring — closets, landings, and hallways. Only exclude areas under fixed appliances or permanent fixtures that won't be moved.
